There are currently a number of possible recommendations for vitamin D. The smallest possible dose is 200 IU (5 μg) and is the official reference intake in the Czech Republic. However, this is the minimum value for the prevention of rickets. It does not indicate the optimal amount of vitamin D we should be taking in order to maintain optimal health. The National Institute of Public Health itself defines the optimal level of 600 IU (15 μg) in its recommendations, which is a general recommendation in the EU.
However, even these boundaries are gradually becoming insufficient as research advances.
Currently, depending on the lifestyle, we can talk about the optimal dose in the values of 1000 – 3000 IU per day, which again depends on the factors listed above. In general, 1000 IU can be taken as a unit of measurement in the summer and 2000–3000 IU per day in the winter months.
