ASA is one of the so-called non-opioid pain relievers and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. What they have in common is that they inhibit the formation of prostaglandins (certain messenger substances). In this way, both the transmission and perception of pain in the brain and inflammation are inhibited – and the pain subsides. The acetylsalicylic acid also has an influence on the temperature regulation center in the brain, which has the consequence that the fever drops.
