Therapeutic indications
Niquitin Patches are indicated to relieve nicotine withdrawal symptoms including cravings associated with smoking cessation. If possible, when quitting smoking, the drug should be used in conjunction with a behavioral support program.
Dosage and posology
NiQuitin Patches should be used as indicated below. Before initiating therapy, candidates for trandermal nicotine should wish to quit smoking.
During a quit attempt, smoking could result in a relapse. You should not smoke while using the transdermal patches. No other form of nicotine should be taken at the same time. It is recommended to use the drug in conjunction with behavioral support therapy, as this combination has been shown to bring significant benefits in smoking cessation therapy.
Adults (including the elderly): apply once a day, at the same time and preferably as soon as you wake up, on shaved, clean and dry skin and left at the application site for 24 hours.
Adolescents (12-17 years): The above instructions should be followed, but the patches should only be used for 12 weeks in total. If you feel the need to use NiQuitin for more than 12 weeks, ask your healthcare professional for advice.
Apply immediately after removing from the protective bag. Avoid application to wounded, inflamed or irritated skin. After 24 hours the used patch should be removed and a new NiQuitin applied to a different skin area from the previous one. The patch should not be left on for more than 24 hours. The same skin area can be reused after 7 days. Use only one patch at a time. The patches can be removed before bed if desired.
However, it is recommended to use it for 24 hours continuously, to optimize the effect against the morning desire to smoke. Therapy normally begins with the application of a 21 mg patch and is then tapered off according to the following treatment schedule:
Dosing duration first phase: NiQuitin 21 mg for the first 6 weeks;
Second phase: NiQuitin 14 mg for the following 2 weeks;
Third phase: NiQuitin 7 mg for the last 2 weeks.
Moderate smokers (who smoke less than 10 cigarettes per day) are recommended to start therapy from the second phase (14 mg) for 6 weeks and decrease the dose using the 7 mg patch for the final 2 weeks. Those who use the product and suffer from excessive side effects, which do not resolve within a few days, must change the patch and use the 14 mg one. This dosage should be maintained for the remaining 6 weeks before switching to NiQuitin 7 mg for 2 weeks.
If symptoms persist, seek medical advice. For best results, treatment should be completed in 10 weeks (8 weeks for moderate smokers or for those patients who have reduced the dosage as indicated above) and not extend beyond. However, individuals who continue or resume smoking may have further courses of treatment with the drug.

Niquitin Cerotti è indicato per alleviare i sintomi da astinenza da nicotina incluso il desiderio associato alla cessazione del fumo. Se possibile, quando si sta smettendo di fumare, il farmaco deve essere usato unitamente ad un programma di supporto comportamentale.
Dosaggio e posologia
NiQuitin Cerotti devono essere utilizzati come di seguito indicato. Prima di iniziare la terapia i soggetti candidati ad utilizzare nicotina trandermica devono desiderare di smettere di fumare.
Durante un tentativo di smettere, fumare potrebbe comportare una ricaduta. Durante l’utilizzazione dei cerotti transdermici non si deve fumare. Non deve essere assunta contemporaneamente nessun’altra forma di nicotina. Si consiglia l’utilizzo del farmaco unitamente ad una terapia di supporto comportamentale, poichè tale associazione ha dimostrato di apportare notevoli benefici nell’ambito della terapia per la cessazione del fumo.
Adulti (inclusi gli anziani): applicare una volta al giorno, alla stessa ora e preferibilmente appena svegli, sulla cute rasata, pulita ed asciutta e lasciato nel sito di applicazione per 24 ore.
Adolescenti (12-17 anni): si devono seguire le istruzioni succitate, ma si devono usare i cerotti solo per 12 settimane in totale. Se sente la necessità di usare NiQuitin per più di 12 settimane, chieda consiglio al personale sanitario.
Applicare subito dopo la rimozione dal sacchetto protettivo. Evitare l’applicazione sulla cute ferita, infiammata o irritata. Dopo 24 ore il cerotto usato deve essere rimosso ed un nuovo NiQuitin applicato su una zona cutanea diversa dalla precedente. Il cerotto non deve essere lasciato applicato per piu’ di 24 ore. Si può riutilizzare la stessa zona cutanea dopo 7 giorni. Usare un solo cerotto per volta. I cerotti possono essere rimossi prima di dormire se si desidera.
Tuttavia si consiglia l’uso per 24 ore continuate, per ottimizzare l’effetto contro il desiderio mattutino di fumare. La terapia normalmente inizia con l’applicazione di un cerotto da 21 mg e in seguito viene ridotta secondo il seguente schema di trattamento:
Dosaggio durata prima fase: NiQuitin 21 mg per le prime 6 settimane;
Seconda fase: NiQuitin 14 mg per le 2 settimane seguenti;
Terza fase: NiQuitin 7 mg per le ultime 2 settimane.
Si raccomanda ai fumatori moderati (che fumano meno di 10 sigarette al giorno) di iniziare la terapia dalla seconda fase (14 mg) per 6 settimane e diminuire la dose utilizzando il cerotto da 7 mg per le 2 settimane finali. I soggetti che utilizzano il prodotto e soffrono di eccessivi effetti collaterali, che non si risolvono entro pochi giorni, devono cambiare cerotto ed utilizzare quello da 14 mg. Tale dosaggio deve essere mantenuto per le rimanenti 6 settimane prima di passare all’uso di NiQuitin 7 mg per 2 settimane.
Se i sintomi persistono chiedere consiglio ad un medico. Per ottimizzare i risultati, il trattamento deve completarsi in 10 settimane (8 settimane per i fumatori moderati o per quei pazienti che hanno ridotto il dosaggio come sopra indicato) e non estendersi oltre. Comunque, i soggetti che continuano o riprendono a fumare possono effettuare ulteriori cicli di trattamento con il farmaco.
