Achiote is a tree growing to a height of up to 5 meters. The leaves are oval and pointed. Achiote fruits are thorny, egg-shaped capsules the size of an egg, pointed and longer than wider. Inside the Achiote fruit there are bright red small seeds with a diameter of about 5 mm, covered with seed pollen, which are used not only in medicinal products but also as a colorant and not only in the food industry. Achiote occurs in the lowlands of South and Central America and has been used in indigenous medicine for millennia, especially the leaves and seeds of Achiote.
